Spanish summer culture course - Catalonia: language, culture and society summer
Catalonia: language, culture and society (45 h)
The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the Catalan language, culture and society and to enable them to develop basic linguistic and cultural competence. In order to achieve this, practical concepts of the Catalan language will be taught, along with general information about the culture and society, including traditional Catalan festivities, customs and peculiarities of this autonomous community with its own language and culture.
Minimum level of Spanish language required: From beginner
METHODOLOGY
Each session will include a presentation of the topic based on a power point that the students will study and prepare, to then share it with the group and complete its definition or clarification with the help of the lecturer. Students will be expected to participate actively.

Examination: 40%
Course work: 40%
Class attendance: 20%
SYLLABUS
• Symbols of Catalonia: the flag, the hymn, the emblem
• Eating in Catalonia: vocabulary, markets, typical dishes: escudella (pasta soup) and carn d’olla (eat stew), crema catalana (Catalan custard).
• Basic notions of Catalan: how to ask practical questions.
• Sant Jordi, the book and the rose. Catalan writers.
• The great artists: Gaudí, Dalí, Miró.
• Catalan music: The nova cançó movement, Catalan rumba and Catalan rock.
• The night of San Juan: bonfires, fireworks and the coca de San Juan pastry.
• Pompeu Fabra: father of the modern Catalan language
• Catalans returning with fortunes from the Americas, habanera dances and cremat punch.
• Fiestas and Catalan legends.
